On July 10, Kim Yo-jong issued a statement via the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) and Uriminjokkiri. Neither of the news outlets is accessible to the North Korean public. Her statement was related to the potential summit meeting between Trump and Kim Jong-un.
She said, "Regardless of the possibility of the summit meeting this year, we must not accept [the meeting] no matter how much the U.S. wants one." She reasoned that the U.S. is the one who needs the meeting and that there was no benefit for North Korea. Second, "We will only waste our time talking with the Americans who have no courage to try a new challenge, and [the meeting] could damage the special relationship that has been somewhat preserved between the two leaders. The third reason she cited was that there was absolutely no need to agree to the [summit] because trash-like Bolton had predicted it.
She stated, "The U.S. is worried about receiving the Christmas present before the presidential election. Whether the U.S. will suffer such a painful headache, it is entirely up to their behavior." Further, she said that the U.S. wanted to buy a safe time by "softening us with their door open to dialogues."
She continued, "In 2019, the U.S. pretended to lift parts of the sanctions in Hanoi, and there was a possibility they tried to confuse North Korea's prospective nuclear plans." She said that North Korea "was making a great venture at all risks to break the chains of sanctions and promote our people's livelihood at the earliest time possible, despite the fact that the bargaining terms were not in our favor."
"When the DPRK-U.S. summit talks were held in Panmunjom on June 30, 2019, Comrade Chairman defined his clear position to the U.S. President, who preached North Korea's bright economic prospects and economic aid and asked for further denuclearization measures as a prerequisite, that we shall never barter our system, the safety and future of our people for the likes of the lifting of sanctions of no guarantee in the hope for the glamourous transformation and the realization of our dreams of rapid economic prosperity. He also made it clear that the sufferings imposed upon us by the U.S. have now turned into hatred for the U.S., and this hatred would drive us to break through the blockade of persistent sanctions led by the U.S. and to live our own way by our own efforts."
"We would like to make it clear that it does not necessarily mean the denuclearization is not possible. But what we mean is that it is not possible at this point in time. I remind the U.S. that the denuclearization on the Korean peninsula can be realized only when there are major changes made on the other side, i.e., the irreversible simultaneous major steps to be taken in parallel with our actions."
"I have to point out clearly that it does not mean the lifting of sanctions when we refer to major changes from the other side."
She wanted to give her impression of the celebrations for the U.S. Independence Day that she had seen on T.V. a few days ago. She has gotten Kim Jong-un's permission to get the DVD of the celebrations for Independence Day in the future, if possible.
She finished her press statement by saying that Kim Jong-un had asked her to pass on the message to President Trump to achieve great success in his work.
