As the entire world struggles to survive the onslaught of the Chinese Coronavirus, North Korea continues to insist that it has not experienced any case of Coronavirus. That is their official position, at least.
According to Liberty Korea Post correspondents inside North Korea, the virus has infiltrated its high society, causing deaths.
Pyongyang and ShinUiJu had been the hardest-hit, and the authorities issued an order prohibiting movement. According to the sources, the order to stop the movement did not work, and the authorities executed a number of people, including policemen and security agents.
The authorities have maintained their tight control over the people to stop the spread of the virus, even within the cadres of the Party Central and their families.
The word among the elite society is that the wife of Kim Chang-son of the National Affairs Commission has died of Coronavirus. Her funeral was reported to have taken place unannounced. Kim had accompanied Kim Yo-jong to Pyeongchang Olympics in 2018. In January 2019, he led the advance team of the guard unit to China ahead of Kim Jong-un's visit. In February, he arrived at Beijing airport and went on to Guangzhou on the 15th and Hanoi on the 16th for pre-inspection. He also inspected the areas around the Samsung factory in Vietnam on the 17th. As such, he is a member of the inner circle, and his wife's death would indicate that the COVID-19 situation is a serious one for the inner circle.
On February 22nd, the Agitprop Department issued a lecture material entitled, "All the police force must destroy the spread of the Coronavirus by the enemy. We must never forget for a moment that our struggle to stop the enemy's spread of the Coronavirus is our class struggle to protect our nation's top leadership [Kim Jong-un]."
The question continues to be—how extensive is the Coronavirus pandemic in North Korea?
