Sources inside North Korea informed Liberty Korea Post about death cases due to starvation in the northern region, HamKyungNamdo, HamKyungBukdo, and YangGangdo. “Death cases have been reported early April in those provinces.”
A source in YangGangdo said, “Farms in YangGangdo suffered tremendously last year because of the reservoir for SamSu power plant. Reservoir flooding near Musan and Yonsa also caused tremendous damage to farms and led to the current state of famine." He revealed that a wife and two young daughters of a laborer from Yonbong 2-dong, Hyesan, were founded dead on April 3. The laborer had been dispatched to the construction site of DanChon power generation plant.
The source added that “There have been deaths in BomPo-ri and JoYang-ri near SamSu power generation plant.”
In DaeHongDan-kun of YangGangdo, well known for potato farming, performed very poorly. The source offered, “We’ve had bad floods followed by bad draught. Farm fields in this region sit on Paektu volcanic soil, which does well during the flood season, but poorly in the draught."
According to another source, “Traders out of RaSon special economic district are talking about famine victims in HamHung beginning mid-March. At this rate, many people could die of starvation from mid-April and mid-May.”
He added that “Last December, Kim Jong-un made a big deal about the bumper crop, and before he left for the Hanoi summit, he directed the food ration centers to prepare for distribution. Instead of food rations, people are dying of starvation.”
