The latest buzz around the halls of the Party Central in Pyongyang, North Korea, has to do with Kim Jong-un’s on again-off again visit to Seoul, South Korea. Moon Jae-in of South Korea was determined to have Kim in Seoul before the year-end, sending Kim the message through the media that “The South Korean people will welcome him with open arms.”
LKP correspondents in Pyongyang report that, because of the lack of progress in the talks with the US and South Korea, North Korea is headed toward a new strategy of shutting down all the dialogues for now.
At present, Kim’s visit to South Korea is not in the cards for two reasons. One, Kim does not see what he could gain by his visit to the South. Two, he is afraid of the so- called powerbase in the South. [Taegeukki means Korean flag.] Taegeukki group is comprised of conservative, ardent supporters of the free democratic system, hence the symbol of the flag, and strong ROK-USA alliance. They openly oppose the totalitarian Kim regime.
Yet, Moon has insisted on Kim to visit Seoul, vexing Kim. Kim is rumored to have taken it out on his close staff, frequently telling them, “Ya, that Moon Jae-in, a clueless fool, get him to shut his mouth.”
