North Korean authorities are staying away from the topic of denuclearization in their communications with the North Korean public in general. However, LKP correspondents inside North Korea report that the subject of denuclearization is being widely debated among the people, as well as among the cadres. What is interesting, some cadres view the Singapore summit [between Trump and Kim Jong-un on 6/12/18] as Kim’s “white flag surrender” to Trump, according to the sources.
A cadre informant said, “Kim has bragged about bringing the US to its knees with the nukes and proclaimed completion of nuclear power last year. Then the US intensified its sanctions [rather than surrendering]. Kim lied to the people, and they are upset. Last year, he said he finished the nuke mission and made a huge promise that he would focus his energy on economy. But the people’s lives continued to deteriorate, leading people to question the merit of becoming a nuclear power.”
The source added, “The Party Central publicized that Kim was leading the world via three visits to China, the Panmunjom summit with [South Korea’s] Moon, and the Trump summit. But the people are jeering at him because he can’t solve the food problem.”
According to a resident, “We thought [Kim] was going to get the US to surrender, but he is surrendering instead. By now, all the people know that the US will continue the sanctions until he gives up the nukes. We did feel proud when we heard about the successful nuclear tests. We really believed that our lives would improve quickly with no sanction of any kind once we finished the nukes and brought the US to its knees.”
The sources agreed that some North Korean people have eventually come to an understanding that the nukes were totally useless as far as their lives were concerned. People no longer take the Party Central seriously when it boasts about being a nuclear state. The sources report that “More and more people are saying that Kim should discard the useless nukes and improve the people’s lives. In the old days, nobody could say these things, but now, they are expressing their opinion out in the open.”
