[SPECIAL] NORTH KOREA REINFORCES ITS SPECIAL FORCES BRANCH

Liberty Korea Post correspondents inside North Korea have learned that Kim Jong-un has been emphasizing the reinforcement of KPA (Korean Peoples Army) Special Forces branch as a strategic option for North Korea.

Kim is known to have visited the “Storm Corps” ten times this year alone and conducted meetings with Brigade Commanders. The Storm Corps is made up of selectedbrigades belonging to Special Forces.

This year, the KPA personnel have been mobilized for construction projects in a big way. The KPA is planning to transfer a good portion of the 1.2-million regular army personnel to the construction division. Deploying military personnel and prisoners is a part of Kim Jong-un’s vision for economic development.

Utilizing the military personnel for construction projects has created a vacuum in North Korea’s military strength. In order to solve this problem, Kim Jong-un has directed the KPA to reinforce the Special Forces branch, according to the sources. Kim has stated, “Reinforcement of our Special Forces will [allow us to divert our army personnel toward]building economic power.”

Kim also has said, “The possibility of using nuclear weapons, missiles, and WMD for a war is remote. A war utilizing Special Forces is a possibility.” As a means to encourage the Special Forces personnel, he directed the commanders to “reward the combat troops with vacationsfor those who excel in combat training.” Accordingly, the Special Forces branch has escalated its training by 50%, including the annual real-time combat training.

North Korean youths serve the military for ten years after graduating from high school. Special Forces members serve thirteen years.

Kim Jong-un’s vision for economic development involves redirecting the overall strategy toward unconventional warfare  by reinforcing the Special Forces branch.  North Korea’s interjection of the Special Forces warfare backed by its nuclear and biological weaponry could present South Korea with new form of security risk.
