A new kind of fear politics is blowing across the North Korean landscape these days, according to Liberty Korea Post correspondents inside North Korea. While inter-Korean détente colors the popular rhetoric between Pyongyang and Seoul these days, the hoi polloi of North Korea face punishment for voicing their hopeful views on South Korea and unification.
The State Security agency has arrested a resident of HaeBangDong in SinUiJu for speaking favorably of South Korea. “A person from my village was arrested for saying that it would be good to be reunited with the help of South Korea. He said it while he was having drinks with his friends, and someone had reported him to the agency. He is still under investigation, and nobody knows what’s going to happen to him and his family. It is a political case, and nine times out of ten, he is headed for labor camp. Hopefully, his family will be spared.”
A correspondent in ChongJin reported that a resident from Pohang District was arrested for having received money from his brother in South Korea. The State Security agents sent his entire family to the political camp. “Usually, they arrest them in the middle of the night, but this time, they took the family at nine in the evening, and the neighbors witnessed the arrest. There were four of them, the man, his wife, and two daughters, nine and six year olds. The children had no idea where they were going. They were just excited about riding in a car. The neighbors were in shock.”
Another correspondent said, “If anyone speaks well of reunification with South Korea, he will disappear without any warning. The situation is serious, and some State Security agents are even warning the people at the marketplace not to say anything about South Korea or nuclear issues.”
